Did you remodel your entire home?
When we first moved into our home, it already had a solid foundation with high lofted ceilings, exposed brick walls, hardwood floors, and abundant natural light. This meant we didn't need to undertake a full-scale remodel. Instead, we focused on enhancing its existing design elements. We installed new railings that complemented the home's existing stained-glass windows. We replaced all the lighting fixtures and opted for switches with a vintage look. Additionally, we chose cabinet knobs from Nostalgic Warehouse for a piece of vintage furniture, and an entry set from Grandeur Hardware, which contributed a sophisticated and modern touch to the space. Like a tree, our home is still constantly evolving.
How did you choose the hardware featured in this project? What attracted you to Nostalgic Warehouse and Grandeur Hardware?
Several years back, my wife Julia and I spent extensive time in Italy. We were struck by the beauty of the door handles, even on the most unassuming doors. This experience inspired us to reevaluate the hardware we used in our homes. In our search for brands that offered both quality craftsmanship and distinctive design, Regal Brands stood out remarkably in the industry. Their pieces are exceptionally beautiful.
Will you use this hardware again in other projects/areas of your home? If so, why?
Absolutely. Now that we’ve seen the quality of Regal Brands products, I can’t imagine us not using the hardware for future projects.
Did you learn any tips and tricks about door hardware and/or cabinet hardware that would benefit others?
Hardware is an excellent tool for enhancing the appearance of furniture or doors. Don't hesitate to choose items that are more ornate rather than minimalistic. While it depends on your style, selecting distinctive hardware can be a fantastic method to give an item a touch of extra specialness.
Please give us some more details on your business. How did you develop it, and what sets it apart?
I have dedicated the past 18 years to various design aspects, including branding, experiential design, advertising, and interior design. Recently, my focus has shifted primarily towards interior design, where I blend my branding expertise to craft spaces with distinct aesthetics and characteristics. I currently run an interior design studio offering comprehensive design narratives for hospitality and residential clients seeking a more personalized touch.
What is your design style, and how do you incorporate those decorating decisions within your home?
My style leans towards what I would describe as Parisian Industrial with an elevated eclectic twist. I enjoy integrating various layers and textures in my decor, along with a mix of warm wood and metal tones to create a unique and harmonious aesthetic.
When starting a project, how do you organize and plan for it?
My design approach begins with envisioning a space's overall ambiance, acknowledging that each home and project has its own unique 'spirit.' I find it most effective to start with a space's already successful aspects and then build upon them. This strategy helps create a more cohesive and integrated design. Once I have a clear story or theme, I gather inspirational elements into a visual folder and methodically refine and edit from there.
What do you suggest looking for when choosing a house to buy and potentially renovate?
The importance of a solid foundation should never be overlooked in any endeavor. In the context of design, this means focusing on spaces with inherent quality features. These include abundant natural light, durable hardwood floors suitable for refinishing, distinctive trim or molding, and other architectural elements that inherently enhance the space's beauty. With such foundational elements, you can confidently add your personal touch to the space.
What are some recommendations for readers who wish to do an extensive remodel project?
Plan thoroughly and meticulously. Being organized and thoughtful from the outset is crucial. Knowing precisely what you are undertaking before you begin can save you considerable time and money in the long run.
What are some tips for readers who wish to transform their homes?
Begin by considering the overall ambiance you desire for your space. If you find elements that don't match your envisioned direction, don't hesitate to replace them or start anew. Design is a fluid process, much like a dance. You don't need to buy everything at once; it's often more practical to wait and acquire specific pieces as you discover them or as your budget allows. Focus on the essentials: a quality couch, a sturdy dining table (critical if you entertain frequently), and a comfortable bed. You can gradually add other elements over time to complete your space.
Are you working on any other properties or projects besides your own home?
I am presently involved in several exciting projects: a Bourbon Membership Bar in Chicago, transforming a church into a bar and event space in Louisville, Kentucky, and developing a Latin Club and Restaurant in Naperville.
Thank you, Nathan, for giving us a peek into your home!
